Langdale PE Curriculum
Our PE curriculum here at Langdale is a skills-based curriculum and aims to develop pupil’s competence in a wide range of skills and activities. Through our PE curriculum, we aim to embed values such as fairness and respect whilst also ensuring that our school values underpin all that we teach. We aim to deliver high quality PE lessons and often use our Sports Premium budget to upskill and deliver CPD sessions to our staff. We aim to provide all pupils with opportunities to become physically confident no matter their age, background or ability level. We offer a range of extra-curricular clubs alongside our PE lessons to encourage our pupils to lead healthy, active lives and to provide them with opportunities to compete in competitive and physically-demanding sports outside of their regular PE lessons. At Langdale, we encourage the use of active lessons and breaktimes to ensure that our pupils are kept active for sustained periods of time.
By the time pupils leave Langdale, we would like them to:
- Be confident with the fundamental movement skills
- Be wanting to lead healthy and active lives
- Have good self-esteem and self-beliefs
- Be able to think and make decisions for themselves
- Understand ways that they can look after their physical and emotional wellbeing
- Have had opportunities to develop their skills in a wide range or sport and activities
We provide a PE provision for all pupils that we believe builds the foundations for them to leave Langdale achieving all of the points above.
What is the PE and sport premium?
The primary PE and sport premium was introduced in March 2013 to improve the provision of physical education and school sport in primary schools across England.
It has been recognised by the Government, that physical activity has numerous benefits for children and young people’s physical health, as well as their mental wellbeing (increasing self-esteem and emotional wellbeing and lowering anxiety and depression), and children who are physically active are happier, more resilient and more trusting of their peers. Ensuring that pupils have access to sufficient daily activity can also have wider benefits for pupils and schools, improving behaviour as well as enhancing academic achievement.
The school sport and activity action plan sets out the government’s commitment to ensuring that children and young people have access to at least 60 minutes of sport and physical activity per day. It recommends 30 minutes of this is delivered during the school day (in line with the Chief Medical Officers guidelines which recommend an average of at least 60 minutes per day across the week).
The PE and sport premium can help primary schools to achieve this commitment, providing primary schools with £320 million of government funding to make additional and sustainable improvements to the quality of the PE, physical activity and sport offered through their core budgets. It is allocated directly to schools, so they have the flexibility to use it in the way that works best for their pupils.
How we are spending our PE and sports premium
Our PE and sports premium budget is spent inline with the 5 key indicators that are set out by the Government.
These being...
Key Indicator 1: the engagement of all pupils in regular physical activity - the Chief Medical Officer guidelines recommend that all children and young people aged 5 to 18 engage in at least 60 minutes of physical activity a day, of which 30 minutes should be in school
Key Indicator 2: the profile of PE and sport is raised across the school as a tool for whole-school improvement
Key Indicator 3: increased confidence, knowledge and skills of all staff in teaching PE and sport
Key Indicator 4: broader experience of a range of sports and activities offered to all pupils
Key Indicator 5: increased participation in competitive sport
Please see the documents below outlining how our PE and sports premium has been spent inline with the key indicators.
What are our future plans?
At Langdale, we constantly reflect on our practice and look for ways in which we can improve. We have devised a subject action plan that outlines our future plans for PE and ways in which we plan to spend our PE and sports premium money. We use our Sports Ambassadors as well as our School Council to ensure that the pupils get to be a part of the planning process. They meet regularly, alongside members of staff, to discuss and implement different elements of our action plan. Please see below for this years action plan. This is a working document and is regularly updated to keep up with changes in our school and to ensure that we are meeting the needs of our pupils.
